What is Linux Operating System?

Linux is a Unix-like computer operating system that assembled under the model of free and open sorce software development and distribution. The defining component of Linux is the Linux kernel, an operating  system kernel first released on 5 October 1991, by Linux Torvalds. Linux was originally developed as a free operating system for Intel x86- based personal computers. It has since been ported to more computer hardware platforms than any other operating system. It is a leading operating system on servers and other big iron systems such as mainframe computers and supercomputers more than 90% of today’s 500 fastest supercomputers run some variant of Linux, including the 10 fastest. Linux is, in simplest terms, an operating system. It is the software on a computer that enables applications and the computer operator to access the devices on the computer to perform desired functions. The operating system relays instructions from an application to, for instance, the computer’s processor. The processor performs the instructed task, then sends the results back to the application via the operating system.
